Mohammad… How Screaming Turned into Conversation and Running Away into Commitment
When Mohammad was twelve years old, school life and family gatherings had become a daily nightmare for him and his family. Whenever he was expected to sit or wait, Mohammad would scream loudly, try to escape the place, and struggle greatly to understand simple instructions. These behaviors often hid his intelligence from the world and left him vulnerable to isolation.
At Nabd Syria Community Association, we did not treat Mohammad’s behavior as a “problem” that needed to be suppressed. Instead, we saw it as a “message” he was trying to communicate but could not express. Our team of behavior modification specialists and psychosocial support professionals conducted a comprehensive assessment and developed an integrated educational plan aimed at replacing challenging behaviors with functional alternatives, while strengthening his attention and focus through engaging activities he enjoyed.
After two months of consistent training, the transformation began. Mohammad no longer ran away from the training room; instead, he began waiting for his turn with enthusiasm. The screaming gradually faded, replaced by simple gestures and words to express his needs and wishes.
Most importantly, he became able to complete training activities from beginning to end without interruption, demonstrating a level of concentration that had not been seen before.
His father says proudly:
“Mohammad is no longer the child we were afraid to take anywhere. We can now sit with him for a meal without being terrified of a sudden scream. Nabd Syria gave us our son back.”
Despite this remarkable progress, Mohammad’s journey toward full inclusion in his community is still long and challenging. He needs continued behavioral and psychosocial support, along with intensive sessions to develop his social and communication skills and ensure that these changes become lasting and sustainable.
Our goal is to help Mohammad reach a stage where he can attend school, play with his peers, and participate in his community without fear.
This long journey can only be completed through continued support and commitment from our partners.
